Overview

Stacey Murphy, founder of BK Farmyards, creates and develops urban farm projects growing tons of food and flowers in Brooklyn. New to urban agriculture in 2009, Stacey brings 14 years of engineering and architecture experience to the field and forges innovative partnerships with local farmers and the community. As a radical systems designer, she has built a business on the under-utilized resources of the city. Under her direction, BK Farmyards was a finalist in the Buckminster Fuller Challenge two years running leading to a feature article in Fast Company. Her groundbreaking projects include the first backyard farming CSA in NYC, the largest chicken operation in Brooklyn, and the largest school farm in NYC. As a real food advocate, she speaks to audiences of all ages about food, farming, and culture and has been featured in Family Circle, on Martha Stewart Radio, and on David Letterman. Stacey has redefined health classes for high school students: she has developed a year round, hands on, holistic food systems class that teaches what we eat affects not only our personal health, but also the health of our culture and the planet. The curriculum features Shout Out to Fresh Veggies, a youth-led, fresh food social media campaign where the teens compete to drive the most traffic to their advertisements posted online.
