But the corporate applicants are almost always represented by lawyers with years of experience often within the regulatory agency on the substantive and procedural issues which arise on protested applications. The Institute for Human Rights & Development (IHRDA) in Africa is a pan African human rights organization with its headquarters in Banjul the Gambia. IHRDA specializes in the African regional human rights system including impact litigation in national and international fora based on African human rights treaties training and research and publication in the procedures of African treaty mechanisms. Mosaic Communities

United States of America

Current housing policies in Israel regarding zoning and land use planning have resulted in segregated communities split across religious and racial lines. About ninety three percent of its land is controlled by the state and by law and regulations only Jewish residents are allowed to lease the land for housing. As a result entire communities are facing a housing crisis. Mosaic Communities establishes integrated Arab Jewish communities that are open to all residents of Israel thus challenging housing policies that institutionalize legal segregation. The organization leases and purchases land and facilitates planning development and construction of homes. It also sells or leases these homes and provide support services to communities once they are established. Ultimately this private initiative to desegregate housing on a national level serves to generate public debate thereby influencing change far beyond the provision of homes.

Multicultural Music Group

United States of America

Promote global understanding cultural awareness and academic achievement by providing performances instruction and professional development in multicultural music to at risk youth. The population in the United States and in many other countries in the world is extremely diverse. We have the responsibility to examine and discuss what unites us as a country and as a global village. We should be awared of the common values we share in this international scenario comprised of so many ethnic groups and beliefs. The use of multicultural music can help with this unifying vision. Nevertheless the status of world music in instrumental settings is minimum or almost non existent. In the professional performance aspect the presentation of multicultural music in orchestras or small chamber ensembles is not very common. Furthermore the creation of multicultural music for orchestras is rarely promoted by presenting organizations or by the administration of established symphonic organizations. Moreover if multicultural performances are presented information about its origins and its cross cultural relationship is not usually provided to the audiences. In the educational aspect the MMG supports the schools to comply with the national educational reform which includes the application of multicultural music instruction. Unfortunately this topic is not usually included in the teachers training curricula and consequently in the schools music programs especially in instrumental music instruction for symphonic settings. Therefore in order to improve the aforementioned situations the MMG provides music instruction professional development and multicultural performances in the symphonic setting with a research component which provides information about the origins and development of different musical genres.

Roanoke River Partners

United States of America

Spark environmentally friendly business creation along 100 miles of the lower Roanoke River by fostering the community s dream of a world class canoe and kayak camping trail the Roanoke River Paddle Trail. In 1996 people from the five counties along the Roanoke River in North Carolina met with others from across the state to merge their interests in this rich natural resource and in the region's economic needs. Historically people along the Roanoke have depended on its abundance for their own food as well as for commercial goods naval stores lumber cypress shingles fish and more. The river served as a travel route for the earliest inhabitants of this land and those who followed. Its dense swamps provided cover for runaway slaves. Its high banks and sharp bends offered vantage points for forts during wars. It carried barges of fuel and other products in more recent times. Its water serves industries and municipalities from dam to sound. The forbidden swamps even hid illegal stills during Prohibition. One was so industrial that it ran three shifts! The Roanoke remained vital yet there was awareness that this beautiful life giving river was not being used to its fullest potential...or in ways that protected it for use by future generations. In 1997 this group had identified their goals established a plan of action and incorporated as a non profit group called Roanoke River Partners (RRP). Now the hard work began. One of RRP's first and biggest projects was to create a paddle/camping trail along the river and its creeks that would increase awareness of this treasure we call the Roanoke and build infrastructure for small businesses like guides outfitters and many others in the region new and old. Visitors could trace the curves of the Roanoke and its tributaries discovering the variety of wildlife and habitats it offers and enjoying the unique experience of spending a night (or more) in the breathtaking beauty of its moss draped back swamps. In this special type of eco tourism the Roanoke River Paddle Trail would be the first private system of its type in the nation. No small task for certain.

At that time court involved teens told our co founders that they wanted to earn money learn marketable skills and gain responsibility. When they returned to school they also wanted to attend small classes with teachers who cared about them and they wanted help making hard decisions. We opened our doors in 1997 as a comprehensive program for 20 teens all of whom were committed to the D.C. Department of Youth and Rehabilitation Services or were on probation. That year we sponsored a school naming contest. Sherti Hendrix a member of our first graduating class (Class of 1999) wrote the winning essay advocating for the school to be named after Dr. Maya Angelou. The Maya Angelou Public Charter School was incorporated In the spring of 1998 as separate nonprofit subsidiary. That same year we purchased the historic Odd Fellows Building at the corner of 9th and T Street NW. We moved into the building in the fall of 2000 after completing a $3 million renovation. We grew each year as students from all over the city and from all sorts of academic backgrounds actively sought admission. Some of these young people were out of school some were doing poorly in traditional school settings and heard about our program and the one on one support offered to students and others were referred to us by governmental agencies. To meet the needs of our growing student population particularly in the Ward 7 and Ward 8 areas of the District of Columbia in September 2004 the See Forever Foundation opened a second campus of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School in partnership with the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). Our second campus located in the former DCPS Evans Middle School is located in the 5600 block of East Capitol Street NE. We assumed operation of the Maya Angelou Academy (formerly the Oak Hill Academy) serving incarcerated young men during the summer of 2007.That same year in order to help these young men transition from incarceration we opened the Transition Center which has since evolved to become the Maya Angelou Young Adult Learning Center serving disconnected 17 24 year old d across Washington DC to help them gain a GED and workforce credentials.
