Instead of going to feed people all that wasted produce is sitting in landfills where it releases methane gas into the atmosphere.rn rnSo we came up with the idea to reduce this food waste while making produce more affordable for all families. We ve teamed up on this project with Ron Clark who has worked for the California Association of Food Banks for the last 15 years sourcing ugly produce to keep it from going to waste. rn rnImperfect gives consumers the chance to buy delicious wonky looking produce at a discount. Lucie Buchbinder and Susan Phillips specialists in subsidized housing founded The Bread Project (TBP) to help low income housing tenants obtain job skills training and become self sufficient. In 2000 TBP was incorporated as a California nonprofit 501(c) (3) public benefit corporation.After a successful beginning at the San Francisco Baking Institute in South San Francisco in 2003 The Bread Project transferred to the East Bay partnering with Berkeley Adult School and Oakland Unified School District Adult & Career Education. In 2010 with the generous support of Semifreddi s Bakery and Chevron TBP opened a new 8000 square foot bakery facility in Emeryville to provide training and expand social enterprise efforts. In 2015 TBP moved to a new facility in Berkeley due to skyrocketing rents. The new location is zoned for both commercial and retail. Today The Bread Project runs an award winning three week bakery bootcamp training program at our Berkeley site. Products from our social enterprises are available for purchase through Williams Sonoma.

Community Markets Purchasing Real and Affordable (COMPRA) Foods is a purchasing cooperative project that creates an alternative food distribution system for small grocers and convenience stores in food desert neighborhoods in Los Angeles. There is currently a large disconnect in the food system in these communities. Small food retailers in the Promise Zone often source their food products from big box grocers paying full price for these products and then marking them up for sale in their own establishments. This often occurs because entrepreneurs lack relationships with distributors who can deliver produce to their businesses at wholesale prices. Small and mid size farmers who may be interested in selling their produce directly to these establishments also lack the relationships and efficient distribution systems that can connect them to the hundreds of stores in low income food deserts.This service gap between growers distribution companies and small food retailers impacts low income consumers tremendously.
