Overview

Saumya Krishna has an unyielding passion for driving innovative solutions to complex problems, locally and globally. She is the Co-Founder and Chair of the Youth Social Innovation Capital Fund, a micro-financing program that is bridging the gap between impact investors and young social entrepreneurs in Canada. This investment fund provides accessible debt financing solutions to youth-led social ventures, bundled with an array of non-financial resources, and also uses social metrics to measure impact creation. Years of passionate engagement in social issues have taken Saumya from mountainous villages in Costa Rica all the way to bustling hospitals in India, and many interesting places in between. Her unyielding inclination to innovate, create and collaborate led to her selection as one of The Next 36 in Canada’s most ambitious incubator for the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders. In 2011, she co-founded Playfit Health Inc., a cross-platform mobile application company that encourages physical activity by providing tangible rewards for exercise. This company seeks to catalyze behavioral change in order to build healthier communities. She has served as President of socially-motivated student groups including Rebuilding Health in Rwanda, conducted scholarly research on First Nations reserves in Canada and coordinated community service learning trips to developing communities internationally. Saumya is also the recipient of Western University’s prestigious National President’s Scholarship, the University of Toronto National Book Award and the Governor General’s Academic Medal. With an interdisciplinary academic background in health sciences, sociology and economics, Saumya is fascinated by the nature of social responsibility in contemporary society, with a particular interest in the capacity for businesses to affect positive social change.
