Overview
I develop curriculum that is changing the way math is taught. Earth. Looking at the famous Earthrise image from the Apollo 8 space mission or listening to Carl Sagan describe the fragility of our blue dot it's hard not to have a certain affection for the planet. I have a particular affection for western Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. According to a 2009 Raytheon study 20% of eighth grade students in the United States claim to hate math while 61% of middle school students say they'd rather take out the garbage than do their math homework. When asked why they disdain mathematics so much students often respond that they don't know what it means or when they'll ever use it in real life. We need to change the way students think about mathematics. Math is a tool to explore and better understand the world around us and Mathalicious develops curriculum that teaches standards based math through real world topics. Lessons address everything from Is Wheel of Fortune Rigged? to Can music make you run faster? and are aligned to Common Core Standards. Mathalicious is transforming the way math is taught by providing teachers with the most effective engaging and relevant real world math content available. I am a former math teacher and middle school math coach.
