Overview

Louis is Deputy Director of the Water, Sanitation & Hygiene program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This program, which Louis founded in 2005, has committed over $300 million to support innovative sanitation and water solutions that are effective, sustainable and scalable. Louis also sits on the committee that approves the foundation’s Program Related Investments. Prior to joining the foundation, Louis spent 15 years at International Finance Corporation, part of the World Bank Group, where he held a number of positions including manager of innovative environmental investments. In that post, he and his team pioneered the use of new funding mechanisms to support high-risk ventures, ranging from energy efficiency to clean water to eco-tourism. Under Louis’ leadership, this group grew funds under management from $20 million to over $250 million. Louis holds a BA in Economics from Yale University and an MBA and MA (Development Economics) from Stanford University.
