Global Green grants Fund believes solutions to environmental harm and social injustice come from people whose lives are most impacted. Because when local people have a say in the health of their food water and resources they are forces for change. For example Global Green grants grantees have protected the environment by creating new marine conservation areas (Chile) halting construction of mega dams (Peru) passing new forest protection laws (Mongolia) winning bans on plastic bags (Uganda) and banning deadly herbicides (China). Grantees have restored coral reefs mangroves forests and sustainable farms. And grantees have transformed systems such as the indigenous Sarawak people of Ecuador who won a precedent setting case in which the Inter American Court of Human Rights ruled that governments must obtain free prior and informed consent from indigenous peoples before corporations can extract resources from their lands.
