Fr. Benigno P. Beltran

Fr. Benigno P. Beltran is a Roman Catholic priest in the religious order, Society of the Divine Word. For 30 years, he served as parish priest in Smokey Mountain, Tondo, Manila, the Philippines -- a community of 25,000 people first settled on a noxious -- and infamous -- dumpsite 20 stories high. Under guidance from Fr. Ben, the people of Smokey Mountain have given birth to a new community with a renewed sense of common purpose. Throughout his life, Fr. Ben has worked closely with leaders of diverse faith traditions in the Philippines and throughout the world. Today, he serves as CEO of Veritas Social Empowerment, Inc. a new initiative for combatting poverty, empowering women, and educating school drop-outs in a market-based entrepreneurial approach. Fr. Ben helped inspire the creation of Millennium Tools to help people living in poverty to achieve the Millennium Development Goals together.
